Tamil Keyboard

An APT repository for the tamil-keyboard package on Debian and Ubuntu.

The Tamil 99 and Tamil Phonetic layouts already ship with ibus-m17n. This package adds tamil-keyboard-setup, a small command that enables either one for you.

Install

# Add the signing key
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
wget -qO- https://khaleeljageer.github.io/tamil-keyboard/public-key.asc \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/tamil-keyboard.asc > /dev/null

# Add the repository, trusting that key for this repository only
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/tamil-keyboard.asc] https://khaleeljageer.github.io/tamil-keyboard stable main" \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tamil-keyboard.list

sudo apt update
sudo apt install tamil-keyboard

Use

Run it as your normal user, not with sudo — it configures the session it runs in.

tamil-keyboard-setup tamil99 # or: phonetic
tamil-keyboard-setup --list # show current input sources
tamil-keyboard-setup --remove tamil99

Switch between input sources with Super+Space. The layout is added alongside your existing sources; nothing is replaced.

If you have just installed the package, log out and log back in — your session picks up IBus as its input method framework only at login. The command tells you whether this applies.
