Hello, I'm Khaleel.

Delivery Lead, author, community founder, and researcher — twelve years of building, leading, and sharing.

I am a Delivery Lead with over 12 years of experience in Android engineering, software architecture, engineering leadership, and product delivery. My career has evolved from building Android applications to designing scalable architectures, leading engineering teams, improving software quality, and driving successful project delivery.

I work across Android Mobile and Android TV, focused on Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, MVVM, and Clean Architecture. Before moving into delivery leadership I was technical lead for the Android apps behind an international money-transfer platform.

Alongside commercial software development, I am one of the founding members of the VGLUG Foundation and the Kaniyam Foundation, where I continue to contribute to the growth of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), Tamil computing, and community-driven technology initiatives. Represent Mozilla's Tamil localisation efforts, and conduct research in AI-assisted Optical Character Recognition and Tamil language technologies.

I am also the first author of the technical textbook Essentials of Computing, written for undergraduate and diploma students — an extension of the same impulse that drives the mentoring and the talks.

What drives me is solving problems that have a lasting impact — whether that is improving an architecture, automating an engineering workflow, training an OCR model, or mentoring an engineer. Curiosity has been the constant: it keeps me exploring new technologies and questioning approaches that everyone else has settled on.

I believe engineering is more than writing code — it is about solving real-world problems, building maintainable systems, and sharing knowledge with the community.

My journey

  1. 2014 — 2016

    Android Engineer

    • My journey began with Android application development, where I built mobile applications using Java and later embraced Kotlin as Android evolved.
  2. 2016 — 2021

    Android TV Specialist

    • As Android expanded beyond smartphones, I specialised in Android TV and Fire TV development — shipping the TVFPlay large-screen apps, building a custom Android TV launcher, and engineering a video player module with resolution control, captions, and playback navigation.
  3. 2021 — Present

    Engineering Leadership

    • With experience came responsibility. I now lead teams, mentor engineers, improve engineering practices, and deliver complex projects while keeping a strong focus on technical excellence.
  4. 2023

    Teaching & Authorship

    • Years of mentoring students and junior engineers turned into a book: I served as first author of Essentials of Computing, published by RG International Publication — a structured introduction to computer science fundamentals for undergraduate and diploma students.
  5. Ongoing

    AI & Research

    • My curiosity eventually led me toward artificial intelligence, OCR, and language technologies, particularly improving handwritten Tamil text recognition using Tesseract and AI-assisted post-processing techniques.

Areas of interest

My work spans several interconnected areas of technology.

Android Platform Engineering

Modern Android applications built with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, MVVM, and Clean Architecture.

Android TV

Television experiences using Leanback and ExoPlayer, with interfaces tuned for large screens and remote-first navigation.

Engineering Leadership

Leading delivery, mentoring engineers, improving processes, and establishing the standards a team builds against.

OCR & Tamil Language Technologies

Dataset preparation, model evaluation, document digitisation, and AI-enhanced OCR workflows for Tamil documents.

Artificial Intelligence

Practical applications of large language models — prompt engineering, document understanding, AI-assisted development.

Embedded Systems

Raspberry Pi, Home Assistant, Docker, Linux, and Android Automotive — understanding platforms from the metal up.

Engineering philosophy

Build for the next engineer.

I strive to create software that is reliable, maintainable, well-tested, well-documented, and easy to extend.

Technology moves quickly, but maintainable software keeps paying out long after the current framework has been replaced. In practice that means I value simplicity, automation, continuous learning, and open collaboration over unnecessary complexity.

  • Write maintainable code.
  • Keep architecture simple.
  • Automate repetitive tasks.
  • Measure before optimising.
  • Prioritise reliability over unnecessary complexity.
  • Document knowledge.
  • Mentor the next generation of engineers.
  • Give back to the community.
Build software with purpose. Lead with integrity. Share knowledge openly. Keep learning relentlessly.

Selected achievements

  • Migrated a production money-transfer app to Jetpack Compose and a modular MVVM architecture.
  • Built automated UI and unit test suites in Jenkins, cutting manual testing and stabilising releases.
  • Shipped Android Mobile, Android TV, and Fire TV applications to production.
  • Led a Java-to-Kotlin migration on a large media codebase.
  • Published as first author of the technical textbook Essentials of Computing.
  • Founded the VGLUG Foundation and the Kaniyam Foundation.
  • Named one of Vikatan magazine's Top-10 Youngsters of 2020 in Tamil Nadu.
  • Conducted research in Tamil OCR and AI-assisted document processing.
  • Mentored junior engineers and presented technical talks.

Beyond engineering

Outside of my professional responsibilities I read, teach, experiment with emerging technologies, work through research papers, contribute to open-source projects, and build personal lab environments that help me better understand modern software systems.

My personal lab includes Raspberry Pi devices, Linux servers, Home Assistant, Docker, self-hosted services, and AI tooling — providing a space to learn, prototype, and validate new ideas.
